US Retail Closures Deepen in 2026: Major Chains Shut Hundreds of Stores

According to the latest report, the number of confirmed store closures in the United States has exceeded 2,000 in 2026. This follows approximately 4,100 closures in 2025, while Coresight Research previously projected that closures in 2025 could reach nearly 15,000, signaling a prolonged period of retail contraction and restructuring.

The largest single contributor to closures in 2026 is Seven & i Holdings, the parent company of 7-Eleven. The company plans to shut down 645 stores across North America, including locations being converted into wholesale fuel stations. At the same time, it aims to open 205 new stores, reflecting a strategic shift rather than a complete withdrawal.

Francesca’s is another major player affected by the downturn. Following its second bankruptcy filing, the brand is liquidating approximately 400 stores, marking a significant contraction in the fashion retail segment.

Meanwhile, fast-food giant Wendy’s has announced plans to close around 300 underperforming restaurants, accounting for roughly 5% to 6% of its total 6,000 locations. This move highlights how even established brands are optimizing operations in response to changing market dynamics.

These developments underscore a broader transformation in the retail and food service industries. Businesses are focusing more on efficiency, cost control, and product durability. In this context, products such as melamine dinnerware, known for being durable, lightweight, and break-resistant, are increasingly favored in both commercial and household environments.

Manufacturers and suppliers must align with these evolving needs by offering practical and resilient solutions. Melamine tableware, for example, provides long-term value and supports the operational efficiency that modern retailers and restaurants now demand.
